Inilah Pendiri Uber yang Guncang Industri Taksi Online


Jakarta - Nama Uber belakangan banyak diperbincangkan, terutama karena model bisnisnya yang mengguncang industri taksi dan ditiru banyak perusahaan lainnya. Inilah sosok yang mendirikannya.

Perusahaan Uber didirikan duet Travis Kalanick dan Garett Camp. Sosok Kalanick menarik dibahas, terutama karena statusnya sekarang yang adalah CEO Uber. Seperti apa kisah hidup pria yang sekarang sudah jadi miliarder ini?

Kalanick lahir 38 tahun lampau di Los Angeles, California. Ibunya bekerja di bidang periklanan dan ayahnya, Donald, bekerja di pemerintahan kota Los Angeles. Saudaranya Cory berprofesi sebagai pemadam kebakaran.

Pada masa kecilnya, Kalanick sempat bercita-cita jadi mata-mata. Namun kemudian, ia tampak lebih berbakat sebagai pebisnis. Pada umur 18 tahun, Kalanic sudah mendirikan bisnis sendiri yang berkiprah di bidang bimbingan belajar.

"Kalanic adalah salesman yang bagus. Dia menjadikan itu sebagai kepribadiannya. Dia selalu berusaha menjual sesuatu padaku," kata salah seorang temannya, seperti dikutip detikINET dari Business Insider, Jumat (26/6/2015).

"Dia juga pencerita yang baik. Dia bisa mengilustrasikan banyak hal berbeda. Dia juga bersemangat dan oportunis, yang bisa saja adalah sifat yang baik atau buruk," tutur temannya yang lain.

Kalanick kuliah di University of California dan mengambil jurusan teknik komputer. Di masa kuliah ini, ia turut mengerjakan proyek bernama Scour yang gunanya untuk berbagi file. Scour adalah mesin cari peer to peer yang cukup populer di zamannya.

Scour mendapat cukup banyak pendanaan dan Kalanick nekat berhenti kuliah demi fokus pada pekerjaannya di situ. Perusahaan ini berkembang cukup pesat, dibantu dengan tangan dingin Kalanick yang tugas utamanya membantu promosi Scour.

Tapi Scour dibenci para penyedia konten karena memungkinkan konsumen memiliki konten tanpa bayar. Akibatnya, Scour digugat USD 250 miliar. Akhirnya, Scour bangkrut. Tapi Kalanick tak menyerah. Tak lama berselang, dia membuat perusahaan baru bernama RedSwoosh. Fokus perusahaan ini adalah menghantarkan konten web pada user dengan biaya murah.

Sayang, perkembangan RedSwoosh tak seperti harapan. Tragedi terorisme 11 September 2001 membuat perkembangan perusahaan teknologi terhambat seiring lesunya ekonomi. Banyak pegawai keluar dan Kalanick putus asa. Redswoosh akhirnya dijual ke Akamai Technologies senilai USD 20 juta. Penjualan itu dipandang sebagai kepiawaian bisnis Kalanick, banyak yang menilai Redswoosh akan hilang begitu saja.

"Dia akan tetap bangun pagi meski timnya meninggalkannya dan dia masih tetap berhasil. Ini adalah sesuatu yang inspiratif di mana ketika semuanya berjalan berat, dia tetap terus berjalan," kata salah seorang pegawai Redswoosh.

Kelahiran Uber

Selepas Redswoosh, Kalanick sudah lumayan kaya, punya rumah sendiri yang besar. Tapi dia masih merasa gagal dan terus berusaha mencari ide bisnis selanjutnya.

Pada tahun 2008, Kalanick dan penggiat startup lain bernama Garret Camp menghadiri konferensi teknologi LeWeb di Paris untuk mencari ide. Salah satunya adalah aplikasi penyewaan mobil. Tapi ide aplikasi itu dianggap kurang menarik dibanding ide yang lain

Sekembalinya ke San Francisco, Kalanick sudah agak melupakan ide penyewaan mobil itu, tapi tidak dengan Camp. Ia terobsesi dengan ide itu, kemudian membeli nama domain UberCab.com. Camp berhasil meyakinkan Kalanick kalau mereka akan berhasil.

Layanan UberCab pun lahir di San Francisco pada tahun 2010 dengan dana terbatas dan sedikit karyawan. Kemudahan yang ditawarkan aplikasi ini, di mana pengguna tinggal memanggil taksi dan membayar dengan kartu kredit, membuatnya mulai dilirik.
Begitulah, sisanya adalah sejarah gemilang meski tak lepas dari kontroversi. Uber kini adalah startup sangat terkenal, beroperasi di banyak negara dan nilainya sekitar USD 50 miliar. Kalanick sendiri kaya raya dengan uang senilai USD 6,2 miliar atau di kisaran Rp 80 triliun. Pacarnya pun cantik jelita, seorang pemain biola bernama Gabi Holzwarth.

Apa kuncinya? Kerja keras dan kepercayaan diri tinggi. Meskipun banyak juga yang menganggapnya sombong dan kurang ajar. Ada prediksi kalau suatu saat Kalanick akan berada di liga yang sama dengan Bill Gates atau Steve Jobs.

"Ada pendapat kalau para pendiri perusahaan punya DNA istimewa yang membuat mereka menjadi pemimpin besar. Ada nama seperti Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Michael Dell, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, dan sebagainya. Dalam opiniku, Travis akan masuk daftar itu. Mungkin ia akan melakukannya dengan Uber atau perusahaan lain," kata Ed Hubbard, salah satu kolega Kalanick.

Tapi tantangan besar menghadang Uber dan perusahaan sejenisnya, misalnya Grab. Protes pada mereka tak juga berhenti, terutama dari para sopir dan perusahaan taksi yang menganggap Uber ilegal dan mencuri nafkah mereka.

"Saya pikir mereka adalah pencuri. Mereka mulai dengan beroperasi secara ilegal, tanpa menaati regulasi dan tidak berkompetisi dengan fair. Itulah sebabnya mereka menjadi besar," kata Barry Korengold, presiden San Francisco Cab Drivers Association.

Cukup banyak pula kasus pengemudi nakal Uber, bahkan di India sempat ada pemerkosaan yang dilakukan pengemudi Uber. Tapi meskipun banyak halangan, Uber tetap tak henti berekspansi dan tetap dianggap sebagai perusahaan yang inovatif.
